Wheeew this is a DARRKKK romance, so read the trigger warnings and take care of your mental health. If dark romance is not for you don't read this. Also don't yuck someone else's yum if it's not for you.
With that out of the way God of Malice is a contender for my favourite book I have read in 2023. It is the first time I have read a book with a morally black MMC. Killian is a psychopath (diagnosed) and has little empathy or capacity to feel emotions in the way neurotypical people can. He fakes them sometimes but he cannot truly and completely feel them"our way" Yet... I sometimes felt bad for him as his parents made him feel like a monster for something completely out of his control. He was born that way, and based on past experiences they painted him with the same brush and acted...terrified of him, thinking he would not notice or care. Now look....he does some bad things in this book, Like I said he is morally black, but Rina Kent still makes him accessible to a "normal person", and while in no way redeemed I definitely understood him more at the end of the book. I am also a total sucker for a bad boy who is good only to her trope. As someone with arguably too much empathy and emotions, it is really interesting to read about someone who struggles in the opposite direction. Enter Glyndon, she is vulnerable, emotional, and an artist. In some ways a polar opposite to Killian's dark energy. Except she herself behind her innocent seeming exterior is plagued with her own inner darkness... it is different from Killian's as it stems from insecurity, anxiety and depression and manifests as people-pleasing. It takes meeting someone who doesn't care about the social niceties one iota to help her realize maybe she doesn't have to care SOOOO much. Their darknesses complement each other, quieting each others forever racing minds. I think at our core we all want to be loved for who we are... sociopathy or depression included. What could be better than that...oh yeah adding chemistry and spice that is off the charts!! whew... Killian's mouth if deliciously dirty and the spice in this novel is top notch. I love their back of forth sarcastic little banter that grows as they become more and more comfortable with each other.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loved DARK ROMANCE with tropes
