Yes, Daddy is the first book that made me want to pause life so I can finish reading. I devoured this novel in one day as I quite literally couldn't put it down. Yes, Daddy spotlights mommy issues, daddy issues, substance abuse, sexual assault, and a splash of cult mentality. A steady theme is how Christianity destroys queer youth but can also provide a twisted sort of respite for those who grew up in evangelical homes. Yes, Daddy also brings nuance to the #metoo movement through a queer lens.

CW: This book has *very* graphic sex and sexual assault scenes.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this book. None. All I knew was that it was gay and took place at the Hamptons. I almost DNF'd after the first chapter because I didn't like Jonah at all.

But I'm so glad I kept reading. I had no idea I would sob my eyes out several times throughout this book, that I'd have to put it down several times and walk away, just as desperate to get away from its pages as I was to return to them.

I love the narrative style of this book, especially. Direct addresses are so powerful, and this was no exception. My heart hurts for so many stories, if not just like this one, so similar. Especially regarding the evangelical church. My thoughts feel so jumbled after finishing this book because I was so taken aback by its contents and in some ways related to them.

I would say if you choose to read this book, CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS❗️❗️❗️

This is the strangest book I have ever read? It is not a “modern gothic thriller,” so don’t even bother if that’s what you’re looking for.

This is genuinely one of the most difficult to get through books I’ve read, despite having read books with similar triggers/themes. There is something so particularly diabolical and dark sided about gay men taking advantage of other gay men who’ve experienced familial rejection and have little to no support system otherwise. I’d probably never recommend this to someone.

TL;DR: well written book, not fan or queer people traumatizing other queer people for their own pleasure

This book was a good read. It’s a TOUGH read though, the emotional story telling and trauma the characters experience can be daunting. Over all though, the story leads to an ending that leaves you inspired and empowered to take power of your own life!

I had high hopes for this book but it fell a little short for me. I felt the author was really trying to say something in the narrative but I never felt like they were fully able to accomplish it. The story sometimes felt like it was all over the place and some things that needed more details were glossed over.
I found the main character somewhat unlikable so it was hard to root for them. They seemed to put themselves in bad situations over and over and even acknowledge it but then they were shocked at how their life turned out. Bringing them back to religion at the end of the book left me with a bad taste in my mouth. And bringing him back to his father. I imagine the author was trying to point out that people change and there are reasons that people are the way they are, but I don’t feel it was a fully realized point. The way the Jonah moved through life from abusive relationship to abusive relationship became exhausting in the end.
Overall this book was just an okay book and had the potential to be so much more.
