It took me awhile to engage with this book and embrace the characters. Once I did I think I liked this book however I did not like the ending and I think all the characters have a lot more to be developed. I felt like the book was not finished :(

A wonderful story about a challenging life. Wonderful characters and a captivating story line. These are characters who will stay with me a long time. I loved the Toronto content specifically as a TO native. But regardless where you come from, you can’t help being moved by Danielle’s horse.

I was surprised by my love for this book! Honestly, it's a simple yet heartbreaking story of a young girl named Danielle who draws these incredible horses and deals with her troubled family life.
I was engaged and captivated the entire time I was reading. This story teaches you about compassion and love for friends and your community. It also tugs on your heart strings, but in a way that left me still wanting more!
I was also chuckling at all of the Tim Horton's references. Drew hit the nail on the head with those!

This is just delightful. Some beautiful phrases, the innocence if childhood, and just a touch of magic. I do wish Harry had a bit more opportunity to evolve as a character...

The visions of this horse painting are like a portal between the past and the future, the rural reserve community and also the urban setting. I wish that I could see the chalk drawings that Danielle makes to feel the magic that she is creating. I like how this sort of magic isn't easily revealed to adults and also it's not strong enough to alter Danielle's reality.

I am a big fan of Drew Hayden Taylor's plays especially for the young adult audience so....I was disappointed in the first 60 pages of the book. It's not until Danielle as a child enters the story that I started to get hooked. I still found the book long, and in need of a harder edit but! There are some important perspectives here about cycles of generational poverty and violence...I love how the kids are really the main instigators and how this isn't a happy ending. I wonder if the author is holding back on the story between Danielle's childhood and her fate in the big city.....I hope it means another book is coming to fill in these gaps.
