The empathy, gravity, and humor with which Torrey Peters treats her characters is what made this book remarkable to me. Writing about queer family for a mixed audience is an unenviable task and Peters does so with a tremendous amount of grace. I have never read anything that so beautifully (and painfully) captures the tension between our desires, the people we have decided might help us fulfill them, and the struggle to imagine a future for which there is no clear framework. This book came to me at the exact moment I needed it and I suspect many readers will feel the same.
Graphic: Miscarriage, Infertility, Transphobia, Domestic abuse, Pregnancy, and Misogyny
Moderate: Physical abuse, Cursing, Hate crime, Grief, Infidelity, Suicide, Emotional abuse, Dysphoria, Outing, Abortion, Homophobia, and Alcohol
Minor: Police brutality

My main criticism of the book is the author’s writing style, as I found the jumps in time to be really hard to follow in the beginning. However as the story unfolds and we learn more about the three women, it really became a lovely and complex story.

hard to put into words the meaning this book imprinted on me. one of my favorite passages:
“i have a gift for mothering. all i do is mother people. i want to be a mom so bad that i make everyone my children. other trans girls. men too, actually. sometimes when i think back on amy—ames—i think she fell in love with me because i mothered her as much as i dated her… as a child, i needed so badly. when someone could meet that need, it was beautiful. it was the proper place for mothering. now i need that proper place for myself” (178).
