An unconventional look at parenthood and the desire to be a mother that challenges the heteronormative default of monogamy. The three main characters fumble through coming out, adultery, and polar-plunge grief, each with their own doubts surrounding identity and queer lineage.

The first half of this I didn't like at all and I thought I would give up. Multiple people recommended this to me and so I thought I'd try a little bit more to get into it. I ended up getting sort of into it halfway through and then it continued to drag on and I powered through to the disappointing lackluster end

More of a 4-4.5 book to me but the ridiculous 1 star reviews on this made me want to round up. It’s by no means a perfect book (the dialogue in particular stood out as being wholly unrealistic at times) but one of the most thought provoking fiction books I’ve read recently. I appreciated Torrey Peters unflinching examination of the darker sides of womanhood, sexuality, and queerness. There were a number of passages that put in to words things I’ve felt but have never been able to articulate.

For the TERFs, I would ask how your framing of women within the book having complicated relationships with violence as nothing but misogynistic doesn’t silence or shame women in real life, whether cis or trans, when it comes to their own messy lived experiences. To say that women shouldn’t struggle with, let alone express, these uglier feelings strikes me as deeply misogynistic itself.

TLDR: loved this exploration of the complexities of womanhood :)
