I didn't love this, but I read it to a kindergarten boy today who really enjoyed it. And one of my 1st graders chose it as a book she was excited to read - likely because the girl on the cover looks like her. This kind of representation matters, especially in a story with text basic enough for younger kids to follow.

Fantastic pictures really bring out the story in this book. It's a fun story, my only complaint is that nowhere does the author explain who the little girl is or why she gets to go to some big awards ceremony. The book just jumps right in with "My new blue shoes make a soft tap, tap, tapping sound..." as the mc is waking up her family and "Today is extra special so Daddy makes everything I love for breakfast." Beyond that, there is no explanation of the reasons behind anything that's happening. To use this in story time (or even just as a read aloud) the reader would have to give a lot of background before beginning the book.

"There is no
tap,
tap,
tapping in blue shoes on the red carpet."
