The Secret Hook-Up

Pippa Grant

3.93 AVERAGE

I would pick baseball or soccer.

Synopsis:

Being one of the few female coaches in professional baseball is pretty impressive but even more so in a field dominated by men. Addie is that woman but unfortunately, that position comes with a lot of insecurities and self consciousness that make the job even more challenging. However, things will get more interesting when the captain of the local hockey team, who also happens to be Addie’s ex, gets into a bidding war in a charity event to win a date night with her. Is that enough? Not at all, Addie’s bosses want to take advantage of the publicity sparked by the auction pairing her and Duncan as the image of a new community outreach program.
Now that he is back into her life, Duncan wants to stay and he’ll do whatever it takes for a second chance.

Pages: 378
Tropes: Second Chance Romance, Hockey Romance, RomCom, Golden Retriever MMC, He Falls First
Setting: Copper Valley, Virginia

Thoughts: I really enjoyed this trip back to Copper Valley. I loved that it was a mash up of the characters from the Thrusters and the Fireballs. It was fun to get glimpses of some of my favorite characters well after their happily ever afters.

Duncan and Addie were the best kind of second chance romance. They both understood the part they’d played in their break up and worked hard to fix where they’d gone wrong. I loved Duncan’s acceptance and drive to try again. He was so patient and understanding of Addie’s feelings.

Addie was a strong fmc. She was living in a world dominated by men and just trying to make her way. I loved her character growth throughout the book. She was determined to be independent and not rely on anyone, but Duncan kept knocking down her walls.

I love Pippa’s romcoms. They all start with a hilarious situation but also delve into themes that can be heavy. I love the way she creates an ideal world but gives each character a flaw that is incredibly relatable.

From the opening pages I found myself captured by this story and just kicking my feet as I laughed at the absurdity of getting stuck in a dress. I think that all women can relate when we just want something to fit well and it doesn't - that stuck feeling is truly a known one.

I truly could not put this book down; I found myself eager to continue on and felt that letdown when it was over. This is a very well paced slow-burn sports romance. The characters develop nicely and feel real, and Duncan is so sweet (especially with his niece - oh my goodness!).

This was my first Pippa Grant novel and will NOT be my last - I love her writing!!

I was so excited to be back in the Thrusters and Fireballs world. All the cameos of my favorites was well worth the read alone. Then we get the story of the current captain of the Thrusters and the first woman coach of the Fireballs. It is so good!! I could not put this book down. It's classic Pippa Grant. Oh my gosh all the laughs and fun, but with all the feels. Don't get me started with Duncan in uncle mode. Be still my heart. The best part of this book is Duncan sees and appreciates Addie for who she is. Duncan is prime book boyfriend material. I can't recommend this book enough. This is one of my top reads of this year. This book is an example why I love Pippa Grant's writing so much, A must read!!!!
