I adore vampires, romance, and shoujo/josei, so naturally I'd eventually read Midnight Secretary, and boy do I have thoughts. Like what on Earth is this, and why do I want to keep reading it??

At first I wasn't really vibing with the "story" (quotations because there's barely any story to speak of), or the characters, mainly the love interest. Office romances are very hit or miss with me, sometimes it's fun and interesting, and others it can feel very dull. Sadly this was starting off in the latter category, and that's mostly because the MC doesn't have much that she desires for (other than looking mature), she doesn't have any ambitions or anything like that really. She wants to be a good secretary, and that's basically it. That's not super compelling honestly. And the love interest is a self centered, arrogant, douchey womanizer (and also a vampire). So yeah, not exactly things I enjoy.

However, by the time I finished chapter 5 (the last one of volume 1), I was left wanting more.... For whatever reason I'm a bit invested on their story, especially if there's the possibility of the love interest becoming more likable and more endearing.

Something that I don't have much room to complain in, is the art. It's quite pretty, and very detailed (something that is almost always present in shoujo), and the spicy biting scenes are very good.

So I suppose I'll continue on in this series, wish me luck!

Story about a young girl becoming a secretary for a business executive who is also a vampire. It was a little smutty and demeaning for my liking to continue with the series, but it was a fun palette cleanser...

••• this is a combined review for all volumes of the manga

Kaya Satozuki (22) is a workaholic, capable woman who, after working hard for two years is appointed as the secretary of the director of Touma Corporation. The catch is that Kyouhei Touma (26) is an infamous rake in the corporate world, very well-known to mix his business with pleasure. Safe to say that his cabin's always occupied.

All the secretaries previously known to have worked under this tycoon somehow left under mysterious circumstances.

Every single of them.

After being hounded by his father and older brother, Touma agrees, albeit reluctantly, to employ Satozuki as his latest secretary.

Satozuki knows that she has to always stay on guard from Touma but both Satozuki & Touma have their own secrets. But once fate spills the beans the pull between them becomes unignorable.

Touma was a cheating, alpha-jerk. Satozuki is strong and level-headed yet she can't make sense of this unexplainable emotions she feels towards the director. He hurts her a dozen of times by being crude and unsympathetic, treating her as just an object to be toyed with. Satozuki understands that, soon beginning to abhor her affections towards such an undeserving guy but for a reason I don't understand even now, she randomly decides to go back to being his secretary for a reason that's totally absurd. Touma was attractive but toxic just the same.

On a totally different note though, I enjoyed all the little text bubbles where the author gave us more insight about her experiences while coming up the characters. Totally kawaii :)

(!) Includes mature content.

I think this could have been a bit more romantic based on my assumptions of the plot, but I still throughly enjoyed it.

Secretaries really go above and beyond for their bosses in this universe.
Billionaire fantasy meets vampire, meets boss/employee workplace romance. This story has a lot going for it, including some spicy art.
Very much looking forward to the next volume.
