I reread Little Women in preparation for this book, and was impressed by how well Brooks recreated Alcott’s writing style and voice. The character of Captain March was sketched with maturity and nuance, serving as an unflattering portrait of northern white liberal paternalism and white heroism.
Despite the gruesome battle scenes, I really liked this book. It was very interesting the way the author created an entire life for the father in Little Women.

It took me quite a while to get into this book. I expected to love it because I love Little Women, but I didn't really care for the characterization of March. It kind of ruined the idealistic version you have of him while reading about him as a young girl. I think that is kind of the point, to add depth to the character and complexity to the story. When you read Little Women as a child, you're meant to see things as the March girls do. This version is meant to convey to true adult problems Papa and Marmee went through. It just wasn't for me.
