I really like Zadie Smith's writing - and in this book, the characters - but it feels like the sum of the parts is more than the whole.

officially a dnf even if it is for class. fantastic writing but I cannot stand how everyone is the book is treating Kiki even if it is to make a statement. too frustrating of a read with too many plot lines to continue

I love EM Forster and I love Zadie Smith, and I have been obsessed with retellings lately, so I had to. And what if I said i enjoyed this one better than Howard’s End? Will someone sue me?

No, seriously, this was a sharp reflection of trans Atlantic, class, racial, and gender divides wth never a moment of “trudging through”. Devoured every bit of it.
emotional reflective medium-paced

Not what I expected it to be but beautiful nonetheless the less. I found myself simultaneously charmed and disgusted by each character, and drawn into the themes of forgiveness and awareness of one’s position in society. Slow moving, but so is life, and Zadie Smith really brought that to life.
