Gah, at the farmer’s market right now wishing I had free reign to cry! I honestly wasn’t moved to like, FLIP the pages hardcore through most of the book until the last like hundred, maybe because it all just felt ‘real.’ But dang… loved it. Near the end there were like three spots where my brain started feeling fuzzy and my thoughts were swimming, and I realized I just needed to cry, and that was all. Luckily, it’s a sweaty day at the market so I can play it off easily.
I just felt a lot, watching all the characters find themselves through this chaos and pain.

A joy of a book, with wonderful insights about family, ideas of art and the ongoing fights of academia. There is something wonderfully self-contained about the campus novel which makes it a relaxing read during the current crisis, it is possible to get wrapped up in the issues of a small, deeply intelligent community without thinking of other things. I think that more would be made of the power relationships that the book contains if written now, and its points can feel hammered home, but these are quibbles
