Thanks to Netgalley and Hachette Children’s Books for giving me this book to review.

16 year old Elizabeth doesn’t look dangerous but she is one of the best witch hunters in Anglia, and the price for doing witch craft is death by fire. However, when Elizabeth is accused of being a witch, she is declared a traitor and is throw in prison until her execution. Hours before death she is rescued by Nicholas Perevil, the most powerful and wanted wizard, and in return he asks her to track down the person who has cursed him. As she discovers more about the curse and about witches and wizards she begins to question everything she has known.

Witch Hunter is an OK book but I did find it hard to get into. Also while it was well written but I just did not care about the story.

Elizabeth is an annoying and dull at the same time and it felt like she had no personality, apart from at the beginning in which she is a hypocrite. However, I did like Nicholas and his group of wizards and witches.

I sure most will like this book but I just struggled a lot with it.

Had the ARC for the sequel not arrived in my mailbox, I probably never would have picked this up, but I'm so glad I did!

Elizabeth Grey is a witch hunter in the 1500s. Her parents are dead; they and many others died in a plague caused by magic. The Inquisitor, Lord Blackwell, has made magic punishable by death in retaliation, giving rise to the Reformers, a group of witches and others who believe his policies are too harsh, and rebellion is stirring in Anglia. Elizabeth suddenly finds herself accused of witchcraft, thrown in Fleet and sentenced to death at the next burning. Deathly ill with jail fever, she is rescued by the most notorious wizard of them all, Nicholas Perevil. They make a deal: he will help her escape her punishment if she breaks the curse that is killing him. Just one problem: Perevil and his compatriots don't know Elizabeth is a witch hunter, and if they find out, there will be consequences, for her and for them. But what Elizabeth doesn't expect is for these witches and wizards to change her opinion of what is right and wrong.

The plot itself is highly predictable, but the characters are enjoyable and the plot moves quickly, making this a fun book for anyone who likes magic.

Okay, so this isn't the best historical-fantasy book ever. There are a lot of cliches where the plot is concerned and the world-building is pretty much nonexistent . Yet somehow, I couldn't help but be entertained while reading it! I very much enjoyed the characters in this. The writing was also quite good, with on-point pacing that kept me on my toes. Overall, I'd recommend this if you're looking for something really fun and entertaining, though if you are looking for a really epic fantasy story, you will probably find this disappointing.

I did not finish this book. While I think the premise is very interesting and has a lot of potential, and while I understand that it's complete fantasy/alt history, I just could not get past the completely modern dialogue and attitudes set in a fictionalized medieval England. In the first few pages a character protests something along the lines of, "Paperwork? On a Saturday?" It just didn't jibe for me. Which is a shame, because I really wanted to see where she was going to go with it.

This book wasn't very well written, I couldn't truly get into the story because of how bad it was written, but I did enjoy it and I liked the characters and the story all though I do not like the main couple.

I really liked this book. Full review over here: https://rickusbookshelf.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/arc-review-the-witch-hunter-by-virginia-boecker-the-witch-hunter-1/

3.5 stars. I very much enjoyed The Witch Hunter - I enjoyed the characters and I enjoyed the relationships between the different characters. I wish there was more emphasis on what happened to Elizabeth
Spoiler and the King. It seemed what would have been a traumatic effect was heavily downplayed. It was also a little confusing - was she with child or was she just protecting against herself having a child? Was she miscarrying or was it just jail fever?
.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The whole book I was super engaged and enthusiastic. In the beginning it’s almost hilarious how amateurish Elizabeth and her fellow witch hunter friend Caleb are, fighting with each other as they are about to arrest some wizards. And then they claim to be the best witch hunters in Anglia. Makes me curious how inadequate the rest is. The world is really well put together, I imagined myself being in an alternate medieval England. Together with all the action and the fast pace the story generally has, it was a quick, but enjoyable read.

Again, the main female protagonist falls in love with the first guy she meets. But fortunately, this time it’s not the pretty superhero but the geeky wizard. I start to think that it must be really, really hard not to let that happen, as I see it in every YA book. I understand that it might have been different in medieval times, but you’re not telling me that there were no independent women back then.

But the end… What can I say about the end? It was an anti-climax. It could have been epic, but it was average. A book this quality deserves better. It is hard for me to give my final rating, as my feelings are impacted a lot by the not-so-satisfying ending. But seeing that I absolutely loved the rest of the book, I should really give it a positive rating. And I’m still very much planning to read the sequel, which will be published in 2016!

I like the historical throwback in this book, it was an interesting twist.

The book started out really good, fast paced, good characters, a female lead that wasn't in an incredible angsty love triangle.

But is started to drag around 200 pages in. I had a hard time finishing it, and I felt like it could have been made into one book, I have a bad feeling the second one is going to be really slow.

What. What. WHAT. WHAT!? There are reasons why we have "most anticipated" novels. This, this book right here is the epitome of "most anticipated". The Witch Hunter drags you in from page one and keeps you wanting more after the last page. There's so much emotion and betrayal and amazingness that I literally cannot handle it. I picked up this book with high expectations. Only a handful of times have my expectations that were high to begin with been surpassed. This is one of those times. I flew through the first 150 pages without even noticing. It went by so fast, because I kept turning and turning and turning the pages until BAM!!! half way through the book. Then the last chapter or so just magnified the awe. I needed to set the book to the side when I was finished, because I no longer felt worthy to be holding it.

Just a few things that are amazing in this book:
1. The main character; badass female that looks all cute, but is a raging fighter.
2. No instalove. Hardly focuses on love at all, but when it does, it's perfect.
3. The plot. Unique, surprises you, keeps you guessing, makes you want more.
4. The other major characters. Don't worship the ground that the main character walks on, make their own decisions, actually add to the plot and aren't just there to be there.
5. Character development. Slow, not instant, but definitely noticeable by the end .

Long story short, you're going to want this on your shelf when it comes out.
