It's so hard for me to read plays - I really, really have to see something before I get it (so, I guess I'll be searching Netflix for any filmed Lysistrata productions). I got some of the humor but I think some of the jokes are sight-gags that I can't quite visualize.
The translation strikes me as a weird combo of rhyming and 1960s West End theatre director ("Merrie, baby"). If anything, these are a bit of a history lesson because I know doodle-squat about the minutiae of classical Greek wars/politics so the notes (for The Acharnians especially) were really helpful for knowing what issue facing Athenian society Aristophanes is poking fun at.

the author doesn’t mention the real comedy of men having to play all the women characters in lysistrata as it was forbidden for women to partake in plays. and i also didn’t understand if aristophanes wrote it in an ironic way or he genuinely believed that behind all wars lied the irrationality of men’s behaviour. maybe i looked over it or maybe it was not made clear in the book

translation was weird and felt very modern in a bad way. however the play itself was entertaining. was able to finish the whole play of Lysistrata in an hour or so.
