At times I found it cute and funny, but I kept getting bored too... It was an okay read

I really liked this book. I thought the characters, relationships, and situations were all very relatable.

I am so done with this book. I read a bit more than 100 pages and it was SO boring and dull.
The fact that they think they can only have eachother as a friend because the others are "lame" and "typical high school students" is just so weird. You want to tell me that every single student other than Dave and Julia hooked up with teachers, have dyed their hair a rainbow color or skinny diped? The only common/realistic thing is pining silently after someone but since obviously the ending will probably be them getting together, other than the begining part with the party what I read bored me and felt unrealistic.

Dave and Julia have been friends forever. Like all other hipsters, they have decided to create a list of rules to always do, never do, and sometimes do. These rules work to ensure that the two do not end up like a cliché. Turns out clichés are clichés for a reason. Dave is in love with Julia, but alas cannot tell her because it would ruin the friendship. He pines after her throughout high school, attempting to move on with other girls.

Senior year they uncover the list again and Julia decides to do everything on the list. She wants to be the ultimate cliché, because that is just hilarious.

I really liked this author’s first book, but the characters in this book were too vapid to like. I couldn’t get onboard with the plot or characters.

3.5 Stars.

Bittersweet is the first word that comes to mind with this one. For some reason, I was anticipating more of a romantic comedy, which this wasn't. And that's OK.

The characters are relatable and their struggles are consistent with being teenagers. The love triangle aspect is there, sure, but again, these ARE teenagers we're talking about. I don't know too many real-life teens who have it all figured out.

I like Adi's writing style and I'm looking forward to what he comes up with next.

I see the appeal of a novel like Never Always Sometimes because it's addressing the teens who judge and stereotype people while trying SO HARD to be individualistic and weird. But, we still have a pair of seventeen year olds who act above it all because they're sooooooo much smarter and stranger than their peers. Sigh. I fear I'm too old for this. But at least they admitted (well, Dave admitted) that they weren't always right about people.

That aside, the writing style and dialogue actually enabled me to fly through it. I definitely liked Gretchen more than Dave & Julia put together. The thing with Mr. Marroney made me supremely uncomfortable. Julia McHigh Horse was annoying and selfish 75% of the time. But I'm grateful for character development and growth with Dave, Julia, and even Brett.

The way everything shook out isn't at all surprising to me, except for maybe the last thing. Remember that time on Scrubs when Elliot was with a really great guy and then all of the sudden J.D. wanted her? Yeah, that story line was regurgitated in this book. And so, I have trouble deciding what I would actually rate this... 1 star for finishing it + 1 star for Gretchen + 1 star for the occasional internet laugh or squishing my face due to cuteness.
