Amazing read, I love Verne's writing style; the quick pivots between adventures throughout the book add a spontaneity and sense of wonder to the tone despite the heavier nature of the intercut chapters. Only one complaint: I feel that the two larger events toward the end of the book were rushed through, despite them being massive setpiece-like discoveries.

I guess, by my own rules, I technically have to give this book 2 stars because I finished it. But I vehemently hate this book. I don't know why it's put on such a pedestal. It's lazy writing. I mean, Verne spends literal *pages* giving the scientific name for every fish that passes the submarine, but then uses a deus ex machina to avoid writing the hard part of the climax after building up all this tension? It's ridiculous, lazy, and rude to do to one's readers!
Spoiler
Seriously. After all the drama of the submarine being dragged into a whirlpool, he hits his head after like 5 minutes and then miraculously wakes up on the shore perfectly fine? It's unbelievable and unrealistic.

How can a book about adventuring in a submarine, hunting and fighting sea monsters be SO BORING!
