As a kid I wanted to be a marine biologist and this book was my Bible and reason for wanting to do so. I loved the adventure and Captain Nemo and still do…but with the glasses of adulthood you are better able to see the flaws in things you once loved without prejudice. This book is flawed. The first 200 pages are great and interesting, but then afterwords it drags … and that’s not including the fact that there is some racism in there too (the illustrator is also guilty of this too) with relation to indigenous/POC people. Captain Nemo is a compelling character, but also sometimes can be seen as a villain (interesting how he’s always played by white men in brown/black face in every movie iteration ever) which isn’t bad, but it’s sad seeing a character you idolized so brought down to heel. Otherwise, a nice revisit to a class I loved.

This book wasn't very interesting to me, but it was great for helping me fall asleep :)

This book is hard to rate. If you are someone, who is really, REALLY into almost endless descriptions/classifications of ... (mostly) fish, you will love this book. Unfortunately, that's not quite my cup of tea^^
You know what it reminds me a bit of? A while ago I've read "At the Mountains of Madness" by H.P. Lovecraft and I sort of liked it? "Why just sort of?", people who know me well may ask. After all, I like horror a lot. Hm! That's true, but almost the first 3/4 of the book were boring ... literally, because it was about drills, geology, topography and yeah ...that sort of stuff. The end was awesome though! Really creepy, loved it. I just wished there was more of that sort of stuff in the book^^
And we have the same problem here: A bit of scientific descriptions is fine and interesting, but I have a damn limit xD
