Could not get over the colonialist views of the main characters. I only listened to this much bc it was the only thing I had downloaded on my phone, but I wanted to give up much sooner.
Well, this one took me a long time to finish. I finally had to skim through all the descriptions of underwater sea creatures and just read the parts that actually moved the story forward. There's really quite a lot to like here, it's just too bad that all the descriptions bog the story down so much. This is one of the few books that I might actually recommend reading a slightly abridged version of, just because of ALL THE FISH.

Well, it is easy to imagine how ahead of its time and a revolutionary novel this might have been back in the 19th century when the book was released. Verne has put to life some of his unique ideas about the inventions of the future most of which surprisingly are in existence today. Reading it in modern times however, was not so much fun. And I say this despite being a hardcode Verne fan.
The major turn-off for me was the fact that almost three-fourths of the book was full of observations about the aquatic plants and animals, so much so that it felt like I was reading a guide on marine biology. There are detailed observations about species that I have never heard about. Then there are day-to-day observations and records of the atmosphere and the temperature, etc and since I don't know how to interpret the mentioned locations by their latitudes and longitudes, this part of the chapters also contributed nothing to my amusement. In my opinion, the story also was full of holes which I think Verne has filled with his many taxonomic observations. Some facts such as the backstory of Captain Nemo, his objective, the crew on his ship, etc were never explained completely.
After reading the Journey to the center of the earth, I thought the title 'Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea' would have adventures under the seas. But boy was I mistaken. League is a measure of distance on the water and twenty thousand leagues is actually the distance the technologically advanced submarine Nautilus covers with the main characters on board. Suffice it is to say that Verne focused mainly on the scientific advancements of his futuristic ideas and the classification of marine life, and this should be kept in mind while reading this book.
