As a frequent reader of historical romance, having read and enjoyed previous Tessa Dare novels this book is not my favorite. There isn’t much of a plot, not much happens .  The characters fall fast and hard from the first chapter,  there isn’t much getting to know each other, or will they / won’t they struggle . The spicy scenes are well written and these two love some outdoor, public romping. However, I would recommend reading one of the other books in this series and skipping this one.

I have only left maybe 3 negative reviews ever, I usually can't be bothered to spend the time, but this is going to be one of them. I kept trying, hoping that the characters were being set up to mature and grow as people, but it wasn't happening, and I finally checked other reviews to learn it was never going to.
This book is wildly misogynistic, sickeningly homophobic, and just plain badly written. The male lead is possessive and has no concept of boundaries or respect for women as human beings with thoughts and rights of their own. Every man who isn't a red-blooded asshole panting to become a soldier is framed as a "pansy," not a "real man," and is repeatedly described in the most dehumanizing terms. I'll pass on anything else by this author.

I loved this! I was surprised, because I attempted to read it once before and only got about 7% of the way in before I put it down. But I was definitely wrong the first time.

From the first page I was gripped by the characters. The couple's strengths and weaknesses fit together so well, in ways that you would not expect at first. Seeing them both overcome their insecurities and grow together was so beautiful. I also appreciated that they had real problems that they had to work through in order to be together, and that they were so good at communicating with one another about them (not just the misunderstanding trope over and over again). I really believed that they were each other's Person by the end of the book.

I also appreciate that the author did not let the time period rob any of the women of being badasses. All of the supporting characters were so delightful that I am excited to read the rest of the books in the series to delve into new pairings.

Honestly it was everything I could ask for in a historical romance.
