I didn’t really care for the audiobook. I’ll try reading the paperback.

It started off slow and took me a while to get into it. It almost ended up on my DNF list but once I finally got into it, I was hooked

The author is very respectful of how traumatic experiences are described. There is an emphasis on a person’s dignity being upheld even when in an abusive relationship or a victim of violence

Easiest 5 star review I have ever given.
I feel like this book is so polarizing and I just don't understand why??? Yes, I understand the trigger warnings are pretty gruesome but I've seen other more disturbing books not get as much criticism as this book. I'm mostly being flippant, and I apologize. I get we all have our preferences.
Things to know before reading this book:
1. It will not be for everyone. Many reviewers have said this. Ninth House is so beyond different from YA and from Leigh's other works that it bears to be repeated - if the synopsis doesn't interest you, you probably won't like this book regardless of who the author is.
2. It is dark urban fantasy so beware of the multitude of content and trigger warnings. Here is a list that I copy and pasted from this review: drug use, overdosing, murder, death, loss of a loved one, rituals, gore, PTSD depiction, grief depiction, self-harm, bloodletting, rape, child (12) rape (it is only two pages, but it is very graphic), statutory rape (15), sexual assault, forced sexual assault on video, talk of suicide, blackmail, physical abuse, a magical date rape drug, forced eating of human waste (to a rapist), and racism (always in a negative light).
3. There is a lot of info about the secret societies that might be hard to keep track of. Some people will be better at this than others, sure. I don't recommend picking this book up unless you are able to fully focus and read at least the first 50 pages in one sitting to get a good feel of the story.
My thoughts about this book:
1. I loved the characters. I would die for Alex and Darlington. I kid you not, I actually would. The way Leigh revealed bits and pieces about Alex and Darlington slowly and deliberately is what I love about reading. I was IN IT. I was rooting for them. I was enraptured. There was no telling, only showing, and it was so so beautiful. Why oh why couldn't this have been the case with the Grisha trilogy???
2. I loved the setting. Such great atmosphere and world building. The rules and rituals of the various societies are so intriguing to me and I loved every second we got to learn more.
3. I loved the mystery aspect. I'm very very picky with mysteries, and Leigh did a phenomenal job with this one. (Well, there are kind of many mysteries in this book tbh). It's wasn't too formulaic, there were twists and turns and the plot progressed in a captivating and enthralling way.
4. I loved the friendships and the kinda-sorta-hinted-at-romance. I don't want to spoil anything. But, my GOD there is a ship I need to materialize or I might just scream.
5. I loved how long and descriptive this book is. I've seen a few reviews say this book was boring and too long and to that I am just a literal question mark??? My body just turned into one giant ? because I. DO. NOT. UNDERSTAND. HOW. THAT. IS. POSSIBLE. I was captivated by this story and the writing from the very first page. I thought this book was be dense and even tedious at times, but NO I could not get enough. I feel like every chapter, every scene, every paragraph was essential to the story. To building Alex (and Darlington) as characters. I truly love this book with my whole heart.
I need this book to be turned into a tv show. I think it could be so phenomenal. But, even more than that, I NEED book 2. I need it more than any other book. The untitled sequel has just shot to the number 1 spot on my Most Anticipated Books of 2021 and Beyond list.
I might just make a deal with a Gray to get an early copy....
