a story of finding and following the meandering and often lost family stories - the complex theme of belonging and the interplay of geography, culture and family.

Removed original review because wow what a terrible review

I think that if I read this book again, now, I would love it. I may be more mature now.

I only got through the first 2 sections of part one in this book and early on decided this book was just not for me. Maybe I didn't give it a fair chance. It's a great read for those who can relate to the stories told. Although I love to learn of other cultures and ethnicities, this one just didn't pique my interest.

I cried myself to sleep after finishing this book. Full of grief, love, tragedy and beautiful themes that are told through different POVs, narratives and multiple generations. It touched me in a way that a book has not in a very VERY long time. Fully recommended.

Loved the stories of the different families.
Not a fan of the paranormal aspect of the book.

The history of Cuba, told by way of several families. How do they connect? Some of it you know from the family trees at the beginning. Others only become clear later on. Historical, poignant, with a dash of magical realism... quite moving.
