3.5 stars. I love the eco-friendly aspects of this story. I wish we could take better care of our wild creatures and plants.

The fact that Willodeen's family died in a fire is pretty scary. For that reason, I think this book is better for mature children.

Filled with mystical creatures like Hummingbears and Screechers, this is a simple and sweet story about humans' relationship with the natural world.

There are many middle grade books that can be enjoyed and appreciated by both adults and the intended middle grade audience. This, however, is a book that's mostly good for children (and that's fine!). It's a great way to introduce middle graders to the concept of environmental interconnectedness, because the message is straightforward and simple. It's that simplicity that made it less enjoyable for me as an adult: the characters and especially the setting are nice but underdeveloped. In many ways, this reads more like a fable than an actual novel. Still, definitely recommended for younger readers!

TL;DR: A girl tries to puzzle through changes to her favorite animal’s habits. She must interact with the most dangerous animals, humans.
