Not sure if it was the author's style or the translation that didn't work for me. The setting was really interesting though! This might have been better as a full novel, especially the ending felt rushed

Good story, good writing style. I never felt like it dragged on. I liked the mix of fantasy with historical fiction.

The Mad Women's Ball is a historical fiction. Some of the characters in the book are based on real people and the Salpêtrière was a real place where women were mistreated in 19th century Paris.
The short book highlights how women were treated by their peers and by men, in particular, when deemed difficult or "hysterical".
The characters were interesting and well-written. The imaginary is fantastic, made me feel as if I was there. The only thing I felt was off is the book could've actually be a bit longer. We follow these amazing characters and it feels like some characters just had abrupt endings with hardly an explanation of what happened to them.

Engaging but felt underdeveloped and a bit half-baked.

i read this in one sitting and it was honestly really great! it’s such an interesting topic, and i’ve never read a book like this before. i would definitely recommend it. the story made me pretty emotional, the last few pages had my eyes welling up with tears.

one point of critique id like to add is this book would have benefitted from being longer. there was so much that was worth exploring, that wasn’t touched. for example other patients, more detail of what happened after the ball (esp w louise!) and the discoveries of the doctor.
