I'm in love with this book, and I didn't want it to end. I'm in tears right now! I need to own a physical copy asap. I'm not okay, but the little girl inside of me is.

There was so much that I liked about this book (the mythology, the setting, the horned prince!), but there were also aspects of it that I found lacking, and that kept me from loving it. Although I liked Jack and Severin a lot, I actually struggled to like both Hazel and Ben - there was maybe just something about their characters that I didn't find wholly likeable, and whilst I was interested in the story, I never felt invested in it.

I guess part of the problem for me was that I always felt like I was reading a book or story, and not like I was as involved in what happened as the characters were. And that's a real shame, because I desperately wanted to love this book! I still like Holly Black's writing, and she definitely does dark fantasy/paranormal very well, but I just didn't like this as much as I wanted to.

More than anything it was pre-election anxiety that had me devouring this entirely on a Halloween Saturday but I loved every moment of this YA adventure fantasy nonetheless.

So fascinating + lovely to see the beginnings of this faerie world that I originally fell in love with in its later iterations. Holly Black’s writing feels more hesitant here, her world building a little more blurry and her characters a little more cautiously built, but it still feels like her. I enjoyed watching this story unfold, and imagining Jude Duarte and Hazel Evers meeting. I like to think they’d be friends.

Oh god I loved everything about this book. EVERYTHING.
The characters, the folklore, the prose, the romance (ohh the romance), the fact that everyone got a happy ending, the morals, the themes. Didn't I just tell you I loved everything?

Anyways, I don't really know if I want to articulate my thoughts. I just want to revel in the glory of Holly Black's writing and this wonderful wonderful novel.

I <3 Jack.

Nie mam pojęcia jak sprawiedliwie to ocenić... chyba mam słabość do książek Holly Black więc moja ocena to 4.25 ⭐
