I love the ideas and themes in this but I have never been able to fall in love with it.
This is technically my second time with this play, but my first time reading it in college. Easily one of Shakespeare's more refined plays, and likewise, one of my favorites. Will return to it again someday soon!
Update (03/19/23):
Even better the third time.

2 stars. Not a favorite by Shakespeare. It was a little too dry and felt too similar to a lot of his other work. It wasn’t anything new or different and then it wasn’t even that entertaining. Still love Shakespeare and I’m glad I’m going through all of his work but this is one I wouldn’t pick up again.

I really enjoyed this play. There’s a lot to unravel within it.

I'm going to see the Tempest later this year, so I thought I'd check out the source material. This time around, I listened to a full-cast audio version. I'll update when I have read the print version.
The audio was very good overall. I was not at all a fan of the guy who did Caliban. I was surprised by how easy it was to figure out who was who while just listening to everything. The summary of each scene printed in the CD notes was really helpful with that as well. The music, which I think was original to the audio production, was beautiful, and really helped establish the mood of the play.
As for the play itself, I'm wasn't super enamored of the plot (I think it will work a lot better when I can actually see it), but the language is, of course, beautiful. I was familiar with a lot of the speeches, and I enjoyed hearing them in context.
