The Tempest

William Shakespeare

Beautifully written, but bogged down by numerous, tedious sub-plots coupled with lack luster characters made for a very boring reading experience. Skip this one.

It was good to revisit this one again, each time these plays get easier to read.

One of those works I thought was unremarkable and unfunny before we actually played it. Now I'll always love Antonio and his "Giuliana" and their weird sword hilt innuendo. I'd swear on my life that there's nothing funnier than Miranda and Ferdinand being too distracted staring into each other's eyes to notice they keep packing and unpacking the same picnic basket . Trinculo, Stephano, Caliban and the silver glitter rubber fish still crack me up to this day.

Granted, my theatre group is full of comedic geniuses, but the source material is golden.
Goddamn it, Ol' Willy, you've done it again.

2016 -I recently decided that I need to read/listen to Shakespeare, of which I am shockingly ignorant. So when I was in bed with a headache, I put on a recording of The Tempest (currently on the new "channels" feature of the Audible app). I did read the summary in Roger Lancelyn Green's Tales from Shakespeare first. I'm not claiming that I got all the details or a full understanding, but as Andrew Kern says, who cares when the language is so beautiful?
