Disappointed today. First with Goodreads and the elimination of the Most Read Author function. Second with my coworkers. Alas my bootless cries were soon lost in the squall of my imagination as I swept through this play. It is impossible to not think of race and perhaps immigration when reading about shipwrecked royals and marriage masques rife with spirits and harpies. There is much of the Other. There is also considerable drinking and an all-too-pat love story.
The Bard again balances the nobles and the proles in a tale of endless voyage both maritime and celestial, all larded with stuff of dreams.

I was shocked at how much I loved this story! Normally I wouldn’t like Shakespeare all that much but The Tempest was very good. It was interesting and far better than Romeo and Juliet!
L’ultima opera di Shakespeare, che finalmente ho letto, dopo che mi è finita sotto gli occhi più volte negli ultimi mesi.
Che dire al riguardo?
La trama è semplice e lineare, abbiamo il classico tema della vendetta ribaltato però in una finta vendetta, fine solamente al pentimento dei malvagi e che vira poi al lieto fine e al perdono omnicomprensivo, o quasi.
Ma dietro questa trama semplice abbiamo tantissimi substrati di lettura.
Abbiamo il personaggio di Prospero, con tutti gli abiti che gli possono venire addossati e tutte le etichette, da duca a mago.
Abbiamo i familiari traditori, pronti a eliminare i fratelli per aumentare il proprio potere.
Abbiamo l’isola semideserta abitata solamente dal selvaggio Calibano, che diviene prima l’allievo di Prospero e poi il suo schiavo, quando le loro nature si rivelano inconciliabili, quando attenta alla virtù di Miranda. Imperialismo, colonialismo, scontro di culture, la cosidetta superiorità del conquistatore bianco nei confronti delle popolazioni indigene.
Abbiamo Miranda, cresciuta inconsapevole della sua storia e del mondo, e abbiamo Ferdinando, che si innamorerà a prima vista della fanciulla, ricambiato, spianando la strada al lieto fine.
Abbiamo Alonso, bramoso di potere ma vittima dei raggiri altrui.
Abbiamo la magia, impersonificata da spiriti benigni sottomessi alle persone dotate della giusta consocenza… che ricorda un poco la magia dei libri di Stroud, se mi si passa il paragone eretico, ma anche la nascente scienza di allora, qualcosa di sempre più misterioso e miracoloso, potente e inarrestabile, che ubbidiva solamente alle leggi degli uomini colti e istruiti, in grado di leggere i loro strani libri, di comprendere la natura delle cose e di piegarle al proprio volere.
E poi la forza del pentimento e del perdono, la superiorità morale di Prospero che si limita a far pentire i suoi nemici per poi perdonarli.
Inutile parlarne oltre qui, ci sono saggi interi al riguardo e non potrei certo aggiungere niente a quanto sia stato già scritto.
Dico solo che mi è piaciuta.

I'm playing Ferdinand in the Ferdinand/Miranda scene (Act 3, Scene 1) for my Shakespeare class with my classmate Piti. This scene is definitely my favorite scene of the play, and it's a lot of fun to play with. Ferdinand is Grade-A simp-of-the-year.
