Well! I started the year thinking Shakespeare wasn’t for me. Like most people, I suspect, school was enough to put me off for decades. But having read 12 Shakespeare plays in the past 12 months, I am not just a convert but a disciple.
The Tempest is utterly incredible. Others on GoodReads have given much better reviews so all I will say is, this is a wonderful magical treat.
I think it can be read in many ways, humour, patriarch societies, philosophical, etc etc
I see a lot about colonialism regarding this book and I do get that… but who does the island really ‘belong’ to. Even Caliban was an immigrant. I think it says a lot about how the west treated people when they arrived at new places though.
I see that, and other themes in the book in the light of todays awareness, but I think it is important to read this, acknowledge how things have changed, think around the subject, but not disregard the play on that alone.

Cool. Read the play, read the notes, read 'Hag Seed'... Still need to see the play. Something tells me this isn't the best way to tackle Shakespeare...?!?
Love Shakespeare, and this may be one of my lesser favorites, though it's still up there. Love it!
