Apparently, Madeline Miller’s next novel is an adaptation of this, and I’m very ready for it.

I feel like we should have read this in school because the language and imagery is *stunning*. Better this than Romeo and Juliet smh.

(Only read the actual play + very little of the essays, roughly 100 pages in total)

I'm not very good at reading Shakespearean texts but this was somewhat manageable and enjoyable at times. The way in which we discussed and read the text in class, especially through analysing two different adaptations of the play made my overall experience of the play far better.

A competent, solid version of the play. I remember that the the post-colonial essay was pretty good?

Excellent, thorough introductory material by the editors.

Excited to be playing Ferdinand in March. Our read-through was today. It was cool!

I have seen movies and plays of The Tempest throughout my life, like most growing up in our society do. Then about five months ago I read Miranda and Caliban by Jacqueline Carey. After reading that book I felt like I could certainly brush up on the details of the story and give it another go, and here we are.

What I liked.
First and foremost the language. I remember in high school everyone in class hating on Shakespeare but we were fools at that age.
Awake, dear heart, awake. Thou hast slept well. Awake.
To use one that would play a bit better with modern crowds.
Hell is empty and all the devils are here.
Shakespeare is just so quotable. His jokes still work and his gags still work and his characters and plots still resonant with people like me. It was fun to give this full cast, audio drama a listen.

What I did not like.
My only complaint is that this story needs to be seen. Some of it is simply too difficult to translate to a completely audio format. Switching between characters or scenes can be a bit wonky in this one. I found myself slightly lost at times because of it. I think I need to find a movie version to watch during quarantine now to even it all out in my mind.

After listening to The Tempest after many years since I last saw it I have to say that my respect for Shakespeare, and this play in particular, has grown. I didn't really think that would be possible because I already enjoy his work immensely, but it happened nonetheless.

“We are such stuff
As dreams are made on: and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep”

I didn’t think my last book of the year would be this

I expected more about this play, I think it is a bit slow and kinda boring. I needed more action and not a happy-and-easy end like "okay, we are doing fine, we met on this island so you will get everything back". Though in the end is the same as in every shakespeare play.

3.4/5 I liked this one, but I felt it a little bit underwhelming compared to his other romance-tragedies in terms of plot. Still had beautiful setting in mind and Caliban delivers a beautiful passage ending with "I cried to dream again" ugh so good.

3.0 even.

I enjoyed this, the writing was really good. plot line was eh.
