My Thoughts Exactly

Lily Allen

3.95 AVERAGE

Properly compelling, brutally honest, and throughly engaging.

Narrated by Lily herself, I found this to be an absorbing, at times confronting but brutally honest memoir. Nothing is sugar-coated or off-limits. I never realised what a tough life she has had. Yes, some of it was self-inflicted, but quite a lot was not. Her amazing resilience and total acceptance of her mistakes mean you can’t help but admire her. She has been demonised by media and on social media, which she has rightly called out. She is always learning and evolving, and I respect her also for championing other women. Despite her weaknesses, she is a strong woman!

DID NOT FINISH: 16%

I can't get over the fact the first 15% of the book goes into lots of detail about her family's media connections yet she claims her success was made in spite of that...

10/10 : It’s been a while since my last review! I’ve still been reading, but multiple books, which I need to stop doing! I absolutely bloody loved this book, @lilyallen is so god damn honest & straightforward in her writing. It’s a sad book, in a way, because it’s a memoir that contains a lot of difficult, heartbreaking life experiences, but it’s Lily’s resilience & attitude that shine through. When a woman gets beaten down, time & time again, yet can still come out the other side, that’s a cause for celebration. I’ve always enjoyed Lily’s music, & never paid attention to the tabloids or gossip mags, so I’d actually not known half of the tumultuous things she has been through, & that makes her candour even more refreshing. She’s made a lot of mistakes, she holds her hands up, & I’m really rather glad she decided to share her stories

I’d heard a lot about this memoir and so I was looking forward to reading this, despite not knowing that much about her beforehand! I listened to the audiobook, read by Lily herself, which was brilliant. To hear her speak so naturally, really did make her story come to life

It is remarkably frank. She doesn’t attempt to hide anything, or make excuses for her actions or behaviour over the years which is both refreshing and quite endearing

It covers a significant part of her life, especially around her fame, drug and alcohol abuse, and her mental health. It’s a quick, but not an easy read: she has been through a lot and some moments are heartbreakingly sad, which I honestly wasn’t expecting. The only thing I wasn’t keen on was the added Q&A at the end of the audiobook which was a little off but other than that I really enjoyed it

I absolutely would recommend this to all, even if you’re not a Lily Allen fan, and especially the audiobook version. A definite 4 stars from me for this one ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
