A historical fiction YA novel based on the author's research of WWI, Private Peaceful is about Tommo, a British teen, who lies about his age and follows his older brother Charlie into war. Despite what the cover may imply, about three-quarters of the text is flashback of Tommo's and Charlie's childhood leading up to their enlistment. Morpurgo's story is both wonderful and devastating. I wish there had been more about the war from the beginning to hook young male readers from the get-go.

I kept reading the reviews and thought to myself that as much as the story is sad there is not much to cry about... that is only until reaching the last two pages of the book. I was literally sobbing and could not see through my eyelashes to finish reading the final sentances. Had to stop once and then finally I've finished it and as I'm writing this I still have tears in my eye. A very good book.
