This book with Valeks perspective was amazing! I would def recommend reading Poison Study first, but after reading Poison study this book is still not boring! The author did a great job introducing new plots to still make this one tense and interesting.
I also loved to see Valek being head over heels in love with Yelena, after him being very cold in Poison Study. I mean... him calling her "love" in his thoughts is just 🤌🤌😍

Welcome to 350 pages of Valek aggressively being a Yelena simp.

Meh. I recall loving this trilogy and I'm not sure if it's just that I didn't care for Valek's voice/POV, or if it just needed another round of editing (it was self published) but ultimately it left me unsatisfied. But also wanting to revisit the original trilogy so maybe that's actually a win?

Valek returns

Typically, I'm not inclined to enjoy novel retellings, so I approached this one cautiously. However, when told from Valek's perspective, we are given a firsthand account of the moments he fell in love with Yelena and the immense weight of responsibility he carries. Admittedly, there are some elements that appear borrowed from "Poison Study," yet it offers a deeper understanding for fans of the "Study" series.

If we minus the "romance" from this book then I really liked it, but to be honest this book kinda made me start to dislike Valek which I never thought was possible. I enjoyed his interactions with the Commander; it was nice to get a sneak peek at their friendship. And of course I'll always be thrilled with extra Janco content; still one of my favourite book characters! However, Valek's internal monologue when it came to Yelena was irksome and at times creepy...so yeah, I did not enjoy this anywhere near as much as Poison Study, which I reread on the regular.

I really liked seeing this story from Valek's point of view. The romance was a little more heavy-handed than in the original Poison Study book, since it seems that Valek had feelings for Yelena long before she admitted to it herself, but it was neat to see what else was going on when Yelena was off-screen.
