A pretty typical HB volume. Great art and interesting narrative movement. Time means nothing and Hellboy has always reflected that.

This probably wasn't the best jumping on point for me having never read any Hellboy before. Mignola's artwork is always incredibly striking and appealing but when it came to the story it just seemed to be Hellboy wandering around Hell and looking at stuff without anything really happening. Maybe I need to read further to get the point of it, or maybe I need everything beforehand to understand how significant this is, but as it stands, it didn't do much for me, and I won't be in a hurry to read more.

I had to rein myself in to avoid just giving this an automatic 5 stars because it was so great to come back to Mignola's artwork and his Hellboy universe. All of that is there, and the artwork and atmosphere are certainly the highlight. The story meanders a bit (which Hellboy books seem to do - maybe I should get over it, but when the story pushes forward it's so good! I just want more of that, is that so wrong?)
As confusing as I sometimes find the Hellboy universe (IS there any continuity??), I can't stop from reading them. The artwork is just breathtaking. And the storytelling is compelling enough to keep me coming back for more.
Not the best place for a new reader to find Hellboy since the entire story arc has him wandering around in Hell after having his heart ripped out at the end of the last collection. This does bring Hellboy up to speed on what is happening all over hell so it is mostly a setup for the next book. The usual good quips come out of Hellboy dealing with everyone and some nice historical crossover during the course of the story.
