"A theater prompter lives in my head and shouts cues at me incessantly. Don't touch your face. Smile. Say 'Thank you.' Laugh. Take your jacket off. Hang it on the chair. Smile. Smile. Not too wide. No teeth."

Enid is my internal monologue, and I think she will resonate with a lot of readers who, like Enid, felt like they were always a little off. Lovely book, I laughed, I cried, I clutched my pearls. Emily Austin is a new favorite.

I have always felt that I was an empathetic person, but this book really challenged me in that. The protagonist and her mother were really hard for me to enjoy. I appreciated the growth of the protagonist experience. I also appreciated how they addressed mental health disorders. Ultimately, the last 30 minutes of this book are what brought me to raise it by .25. I appreciated the read, but I don’t think I would read it again.
