Death of a Salesman

Willy Loman is a tragic character that many readers will be able to relate to on some level. I found the family arguments with guilt and shame being shifted and thrown on Biff especially spot on. He believed in a fashion, "The American Dream", an illusion or in his case a delusion that he believed would lead to the sort of greatness he deserved if he could just be a little more likable, and this idea is something he instilled in his whole family. Willy fights for the illusion but as reality becomes more and more undeniable he's unable to hide in the empty phrases and delusions of grandeur that have carried him through life.

This was certainly an interesting read, and I really need to see a live performance of all these plays, because the amount of description that's gone into the set is astonishing. There's not much else to say about it really?

So I read this book for English class. I found it interesting and definitely unique. It explores the inner workings of the mind of a salesman, Willy Loman while revealing his effects on those around him. He is bipolar and hopelessly idealistic and constantly wants what he can't achieve. He jumps around between the past, the present, and imagines realities, never quite knowing what is real.

A main theme in this book is the attack of the belief of the self-made man. Miller shows the failure of a man who believes that being well-liked will lead to success. Willy never actually worked hard and ultimately failed because of this.

I thought Linda's character was the most heartbreaking of all. She loves Willy so much and he doesn't even acknowledge this. He often puts her down and excludes for from his fantasies.

Overall, I thought this play was very interesting and offered an interesting psychological analysis. However, I saw it as a little unrealistic and poorly described at times.

I had to read this play in high school. I thought it was boring.
