'Prompt as ever, hell erupted. Shells whined over, flashes of light, plumes of water from the drainage ditches, tons of mud and earth flung into the air.'
The weakest of the Regeneration trilogy. Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen barely flicker now from Pat Barker's pen and Billy Prior and Dr Rivers dominate. Unfortunately, they aren't even together and we don't get to see much of Rivers' excellent counselling work at Craiglockhart or elsewhere. Rivers' storyline is instead a flashback to his time in Melanesia while Prior returns to the front.
Dare I say, there is too much Prior? And can we also acknowledge that Rivers is written best when his day is locked in step with the Craiglockhart itinerary or in a similar setting? I'm glad that I completed the trilogy, but I just wasn't charmed by its final entry.

The Ghost Road is the third book in the Regeneration trilogy, and I have to say, I was disappointed. Rivers has moved to war torn London, still dealing with the young fall out from the devastating World War. Prior, a character from the periphery of Regeneration, who moved to the fore in The Eye In The Door, returns to France against Rivers's advice, and the story takes them both to the end of the War. In this respect, the novel was just as captivating and equally sobering as the first. What I couldn't grasp was the need for the bizarre back story of Rivers, his experiences in colonial Africa, and acceptance into a tribe of headhunters. I expected a large denouement, for all of that to fall in with the modern day story, to learn something from his experience there. But it falls flat against the horrifying final moments of the war in France. So mixed feelings about this one, but an excellent trilogy all told.
the conclusion to what may be my favourite trilogy of all time.

Very well written and disturbing. I was given this book as a gift and after reading it discovered that it was the second? book in a series. Nevertheless it was very well done and hard to put down. I wish it were longer. Will have to re-read including the other book or books in this series.
