This book was absolutely phenomenal and had me hooked until the very last page!

Reading this after recently reading Lonely City by Olivia Laing, I feel myself wondering more and more about what it would be like to have your head above water - as opposed to under it like the main character, Lee, describes in the book. Despite the inateness of connection that all humans crave, we have assigned a sense of ‘abnormality’ in our inability to do so, by proxy, loneliness. Watching others, who are ‘normal’, form connections presents an idea of how things are supposed to be, but all that does limit our ways of connecting. I enjoyed reading Lee go from a stickler of rules and being driven by purpose and rationality, to then spiralling in her attempts to ‘live’ where she expands her perceived comfort zone and seeks out connections. It was one of the more beautifully captured parts of the book, and one I want to carry with me.

Some of my issues with the book are its length and the AI story line. The pacing was great until we get to the climax and it’s one big thud. This inevitably hurt the exploration of AI story line, which always took a back seat. There is an attempt at a more futuristic world, but I wish it was detailed out more - there are only hints dropped throughout but never a proper set up. A more in-depth exploration of the tech would’ve really taken this book to another level with its impact.

Another wonderful five star read that I would say belongs in the "hopepunk" genre. I loved finding another book that looks critically at our current state and casts us into the future, with commentary that is emotionally insightful and hopeful. A wonderful debut from this author, I'm excited to see if they write more!
