let me just say.....

WOW I FREAKING LOVED THIS BOOK GOD BLESS YOU KAREN AMANDA HOOPER!!!!
This is my first time reading a supernatural book and I just fell in love with the merfolk sirens selkies gorgons... ugh I love all the variety. And Treygan and Yara's chemistry good lord!! I loved this book it is a must read. With that said you must be very open minded when reading this book. When I first read it, I was like omg there is a lot of info to take in about the mers, the selkies, yada yada. It's a lot of info at first but it all comes together and makes sense in the end. Loved this one. Read the second already and cant wait for the third.

Too much exposition. Even mermaids and silkies couldn't keep me reading.

This started off really good. I loved how the mermaids are described with their hallmarks, changing colors and hair hierarchy. They have some nice traditions too. The selkies and sirens were quite different than I would have expected. Unique and refreshing. Even if they are blood obsessed! Yara is indeed a stubborn young woman (as often referred to) who is thrust into a strange unknown world that she has forgotten time and again. I felt really bad for all her stolen memories and the lies she is and has been fed. It made it easier to relate and sympathize with her. The ending seemed too perfect and what her future holds too vague which was frustrating. I hope book 2 will explain better.

I have read a few books containing mermaids before, but few have managed to capture the underwater imagery like Karen Amanda Hooper has in Tangled tides!!

This book is told in 3 differing voices: Yara - The feisty human turned mermaid. Rownan - Yara's 'boyfriend' and selkie and Treygan- Yara's guardian and soulmate..... Personally, I love to read stories from a male's point of view. So reading 2 males perspectives.... well, I was seriously happy!! The 3 voices flow smoothly throughout the book and its so cool to get inside the different characters heads and know what each of them are thinking!!

The plot was paced so that you were always kept involved and invested in the story. There are mermaids and selkies and gorgons and sirens and you get to learn the stories of each of them. And there were enough twists and turns to have you anticipating what would happen next!

The characters were all likeable and as much as I loved Yara and Treygan it was Pango who had me laughing out loud at his witty and amusing comments!! I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Yara and Treygan. Definitely not love at first sight. There were times throughout the book were I found myself questioning whether I really liked Rownan or not, but by the end of the book he had won me over.

So, if you love fantasy, romance and adventure then Tangled Tides is the book for you!!

It's been so long since I last enjoyed reading a very tragic, yet beautiful tale. When I read the blurb, I thought this book is going to be a fun read about a girl who is destined to be a mermaid to save her people. It never occurred to me that she has to go through these painful sacrifices, especially when it has to do with her soulmate, Treygan. The story starts off lightly with Treygan "kidnapping" Yara and changing her to a mermaid and ending the world's most tragic climax. Never saw it coming. I couldn't think of anything more miserable than finally finding your true love and having to lose them in your hands to save your world. Might as well say that you're not given a choice but to kill your love. I love how the story is more than just about the love of two people, but their selfless sacrifices to save everyone, even people they hate, or they've never met. It's amazing that there are no bad guys in this book, kind of like Romeo and Juliet, given the ugly fate, deception and broken heart that they have to experience.

I think the characterization in this book is very amazing. I love how Yara can be very stubborn (hence the nickname Yamabuki) yet she has a soft heart. Treygan, who is very loyal and would do anything to save his people, even sacrifice himself and his first and newly found love. He never deserved that. But most of all, I think Cleo's characterization is the most brilliant among all. She never had a real conversation in the book, but I feel her pain, her sadness, her love for fate and Yara--a mother's love so beautifully portrayed. She would do anything, even release her chance of living the life she so much wanted, to save her child and relieve Yara from all the possibilities of living a horrible fate. And best of all, Yara never knew about her mother's plan until it happens.

The plot is also a large aspect to why I gave this book the 5 stars that it deserves. I didn't exactly know what is happening, and what is everyone's purpose until the half end of the book. I started off as clueless as ever and ended up as mesmerized as ever. It's amazing that the author can give us the important information gradually and without having to bombard too much to the readers. I never felt confused, I only have strong cravings for more answers. And I got so scared that I almost stopped reading because the story becomes so depressing I'm not strong enough to handle the ending. Even expecting the unexpected is not enough to describe how crazy suspenseful this book can be.

This book isn't just a one-time read. That's why it's amazing because I believe I would still enjoy it rereads after rereads.

**ARC Provided by Netgalley and All Night Reads for an honest review**

This book suckered me in from the first page. Yes I can understand that for some of you that this will not be your kind of book, but i'm a sucker for them.

Yara starts of rushing about her uncles house trying to secure the windows as there is a hurricane outside, it is there that she meets a good looking boy who turns her world upside down completely. When she wakes up, she is underwater and has been transformed into a Mermaid. Suffice to say she freaks out and thinks they are all monsters.

Treygan has been there since she was born and although she does not remember him at all has been there for her all her life on a mission with others along with her dead mother.

Yara has grown up with her Uncle Lloyd and he has helped prepare her for the world she will come in contact with without her knowledge. Not is Yara now a Mermaid, but she learns slowly the ways of the Mer-folk and how they have become trapped in the human world away from their home. She also discovers that not only was her father a Selkie, but that her mother was a siren.

Unfortunate accidents occur that bring Treygan and Yara further together and they form an emotional bond to each other, but Treygan tries his best to pretend that it is not there. It is clear however tho those closet to them that they have formed a close bond and are falling for each other.

Rownan is Treygans half brother, and where Treygan is a mer-man, Rownan is a Selkie. He has been up on land for the last few weeks gaining Yaras trust and being there as her boyfriend without the label. Rownan and his Selkie kind have their own designs on what they want with Yara. Rownan is charged with getting them what they want, how they want it.

Again after having been foiled by Treygan as few times the Selkies come close to their goal, however a conflicted Rownan goes to his father a Gorgan for help. He no longer feels comfortable with their plan. His father comes up with a better plan that will involve the help of others and may also cause his demise.

Unbeknownst to Treynan that plan is hatched and Yara is clued into the plan as it means that Treynan will no longer have to died and trade his life for hers. A plan that would have failed anyway. With love in her heart and great strength, Yara and those around her in the plan put things into motion, even if some things don't go quite as they thought they would.

In the end however someone has to die and so Yara does. It is only when she is in the in-between that she can plea bargain with those with the power to help both sides of the party.

Treynan is distraught that Yara has gone and sits with her stone body until it starts to crack. He is amazed to find skin underneath and helps her out of her casing. That however is when the gate opens and the Gardon whisks away Yara from his arms.

The creatures who were trapped out of their realm, swim in and Treynan is last, where he finds himself outside the place where he knows that Yara is trapped. He vows to stay there until he can see her. It is not long before the transformed but happy Yara finds him and they can be togther.

I really loved this story, but then I love most books with this kind of story and folklore mix.

Not as good as I had hoped, but it's the best mermaid/sea monster book I've read to date.

As I do not feel like going into great detail, this review will be quick and to the point.

First of all, characters: I felt for them, but I was never able to truly connect with any certain one. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy them, it's just that even while I was inside their heads, I couldn't really sympathize that much. Yara is interesting: at one moment, she's tough and sarcastic, and then the next she's very fragile, but I never really got to love her. Over the course of the story, Treygan is shown to be really kind and actually a bit sweet, but I love how he can still retain that cocky attitude around Yara even after he falls for her, all of this making him my favorite character. I didn't know what to make of Rownan at first, but by the end, I actually liked him okay.

The plot & its twists: This book actually had a really good plot, and all things were explained that had me confused at first, so I'm glad for that. The biggest shock to me was that Uncle Lloyd was Treygan and Rownan's dad, and when I realized he was, I know my eyes nearly fell out of my head. The end was really cool, how Yara is now part mer, selkie, siren, gorgon, and human, and I wish I had her new hair color and tail and wings!

While I liked this book, it was kind of hard for me to really get interested in, and I actually considered stopping for a while. But I'm glad I didn't, because I read the second half in one day, and that's when I really got intrigued. My only real problem with it is that the sentences were a bit too choppy for my taste (sort of reminded me of Colleen Houck, but not as bad), and at times, I felt as if there could have been more description of a character's movement. For example: when Yara first realizes she a mermaid. I figured swimming with a new appendage would be a little hard at first, or at least be a thing of interest to Yara, but there was nothing mentioned about it.

Wow this is the best mermaid book I've read. It was totally original and I was totally unprepared for the twists in this story. It had me on the edge of my seat through the whole thing. The characters are well developed and all three main characters were lovable for different reasons and annoying for different reasons but they wouldn't be realistic if they didn't have annoying traits.

The plot one day a hurricane blows through Yara's island and Treygan brings her someplace 'safe' which happens to mean turning her into mermaid so that her 'boyfriend' Rownan can't kill her to get home. The mythical creatures in this realm can't go home because the gorgons closed the door to their realm after a debt was not paid. Yara is the only way for the. to get back home. This book has mythological creatures like Medusa, Posiedon, sirens, gorgons, mermaids, and selkies. Not only that but they are portrayed in such an original and interesting way.

Yara's character was a little annoying. She was whiny amd a bit self-centered, and I didn't really like her in the beginning but at the end she surprises and redeems herself. Treygan is the angsty, moody, aloof, anti-social, Edward-like character that finally learns to have a good time though he stays pretty consistently in characters through the whole book. Rownan was the handsome, asshole that you want to punch through most of it. I loved Nixie's character though and I loved Yara's first teacher (can't remember her name). The story was so good that the characters didn't bug me as much.
