Extremely good! My favorite kind of sci-fi, pseudo-anthropological and with a setting and characters that stick in your head. The ending had some pacing problems, but a really solid book overall. I loved that the author included a rain forest reading list.

Will: "What's happening in your book?"
Me: "There was a spaceship crash and this woman is marooned on an alien planet."
A few minutes pass.
Me: "Now she's a frog monster."
And so begins The Color of Distance.

Extraordinary. This book is best read without knowing anything about it. The early pages convey what might happen in a very different world, without the props of text descriptions of the most important things to notice. There is confusion, some wonder, and complacency. Mind-blowing. and lyrical.

Ah....once again I enjoyed this wonderful book. : ) The review below is from a previous year.
One nice thing about buying one's books is the opportunity to reread favorites upon a whim. This particular title is one of my favorites and one that I revisit every year or so. Why? I am a self-confessed Sci-Fi fan but that isn't why I hold this book in high esteem. Rather, it is the main character's journey of assimilation into a totally different culture and the discovery of what humanity means. The premise of this story is so unlike anything I've read before (of course I haven't read everything in the world) which is why I continue to revisit it.

An excellent science fiction novel. If you are a SF reader or writer you need to pick up this book.

I first read this book in middle school. It was amazing. I have re-read it twice since then. Learning about this alien species, about the main character *becoming* one of them, was eye opening and fascinating and I have been searching for something as captivating as this for a long time with no luck.
