After the Storm by Maya Banks

The romance moved so fast it was creepy. There were red flags everywhere. Almost zero actual character development, relationship building, or sexual tension. The author has a hard on for men deciding women belong to them immediately and getting them in bed days later regardless of their trauma.

On Leve parfois - souvent - les yeux au ciel mais j'ai apprécié l'histoire d'Eve. Et il me tarde de lire une histoire sur Sean et Rusty !

I'm a little over 60% through this installment in the KGI series. I've been disappointed with a few of the previous ones, for a variety of reasons. This is the worst so far.

One of my issues with the previous books is the language. Curse words are thrown in so unnecessarily that it really took away from the story (for me). I'm not a prude, but I appreciate a good flow of dialog. This seems to not be as much of an issue with After the Storm, but the voice of the book is SO didn't that I'm not even certain Maya Banks wrote it.

Donovan falls in love within an hour of meeting Eve and her siblings. Moves them all into his place soon after. It's great that the family supports him so thoroughly but this is just unrealistic.

Frequent references are made to "his brothers" and "his sisters in-law". Anyone who has read the series knows they're all related. Anyone who starts with this book soon figures out they're all related. Rusty has been adopted into the Kelly family but in the next sentence when Van is talking to her about the guys, he refers to them as "his" brothers. Continuity much? Repetitive references to watching their backs/sixes/etc. To put it mildly, it's become redundant.

Two days after meeting her, the supposedly sensitive Kelly member who has a soft spot for women and children is thinking about his exes just as he starts "making love" to the gal who has been on the run and traumatized for months and tears through her virginity. Oh, and he just happened to have condoms in the nightstand of her bedroom.

And why do they all suddenly have southern accents? I'd have expected it in book 1, not book 8.

Good grief!

I'm breaking up with this series. It's not me, it's the series. The last few Kelly books have been very inconsistent in quality and bolted to the formula of desperate in need woman saved by commando guy.

The introduction of Shea and Grace as psychic's was so random and kind of broke the world-building but I forgave it. I even stuck with the series after PJ and Cole and I hate that book. The sheer wrath I have for that book is crazy. But I stuck with it because Donovan the character I'd been waiting for since the series started was coming up. Steele's book was okay but this one was awful.

The big misunderstanding shouldn't have happened. Eve overhears
SpoilerDonovan planning to trick her ex-stepfather into thinking he'll trade Eve for her siblings, she only hears the explanation part.
Donovan planning to betray her and instead of confronting him she runs away and gets captured.

Except Eve is an impulsive person despite her betrayal she is the type of person who would recklessly charge in and give Donovan a piece of her mind. She refuses to be cowed by Walt despite him beating her and back-talks him. She's an impulsive reckless person and her choice to quietly leave and plan an escape is out of character.

So yeah. No more KGI for me. I'll also be a little more cautious of Maya Banks in future.

Poor Van. I prefer my version of Van in my head. DNF.

Kind of boring. Didn't care about the main characters. Found the bits with Rusty held my attention more. I actually found the heroine's teenage brother and Rusty more interesting. Also I find all the Kelly love and loving couples a little nauseating. Everyone is in love, everyone loves everyone else, they all support one another because they love each other. Kind of like a military Brady Bunch. Don't get me wrong. I like a HEA. And I enjoy cameos from old favourites but there are so many books in this series now that having to meet and be told how much everyone loves each other(from every preceding story) takes up way to much time. Not every character from every previous book needs to be given a couple of pages to tell us how wonderful everything is. Once we get the HEA in their book we just assume that going forward.

10 000 ans plus tard je me suis enfin décidée à le terminer pour commencer le 9 qui j'espère sera mieux. On est bien loin de la qualité des premiers. Heureusement qu'il y a l'ambiance famille Kelly ...

Not so much on the spy-ops and military theme as the original stories in this series and that, in a way, is a bit disappointing. As the computer tech whiz of all the heroes in this series, Donovan "Van" Kelly is the one I would have liked to have met most. The story of his meeting his heroine was somewhat lackluster compared to the adventures of the rest of the KGI team, however. While it was a solid story, well-written and told, I can't help but wonder if the horrors that Ms. Banks visited upon the characters of her previous two books (as is her right) and the subsequent reeling shock expressed by her fans (as is their right) hasn't had an effect on the lack of adventure in this book. I still liked it, but I liked the earlier books in this series better for the adventures they told.

I love this author and this series. However, this book was not for me. It felt like a big stretch. The events that took place did not feel believable, and it felt rushed. It seems like most of the book was people repeating the same thing over and over again. This was not the quality I'm use to from this author. It was like someone else (a newbie author) wrote this. The exception was the little bits with Rusty. Those were great!

This disappointment will not stop me from reading the continuing books in the series, nor stop me from reading this author.
