Better than I thought it would be. I definitely am going to read the next book.
Priest is a unique fantasy novel. I was really taken by surprise many times during this book. There’s plenty of familiar fantasy ideas all over but it was presented in a way I’ve never really seen before. It was like a high fantasy murder mystery with a conspiracy plot.
The protag is complicated, and his back story unfolds bit by bit. I mostly liked him though he does get a tad too morose here and there, especially towards the end.
So many intriguing characters dotted all over. The mystery of what everyone is hiding is what drives the majority of the story. It’s peppered here and there with some really nice fights and one amazingly OP weapon that was badass but definitely could have solved way more problems than it does. There’s some nice interwoven world building that tells you just enough to understand the basics but keeps you yearning for even more. It’s a world I look forward to visiting again in the sequel.
What holds this back from being truly great though is the constantly twisty interrogation scenes which definitely think they’re more interesting and meaningful than they are. This book was really humming along for the first half then the interviews with the Green Order knights began and after awhile it felt kinda endless. And not much is learned. Heden is just more and more frustrated and honestly so was I reading it after a while. The dialogue was going in circles and we keep being told that Heden should have already figured this all out already.
I really liked this though, and will definitely check out the next installment.

A psychological story wrapped in fantasy.
Great characters. An interesting take on fantasy world expectations. The gem at the heart is the concept of the arrogator. That idea is the tip of a deep and powerful iceberg. I’d love a whole series exploring that idea. Some will complain that the book could have used a couple more runs from high level editing, so if those sorts of things bother you, be warned. But the essential drama, narrative arc, and characterization are the work of a skilled story-teller.

Fantatic hard boiled fantasy
A great combination of Mystery and Fantasy. The book keeps you hooked from start to finish. Other great aspects:
- Deep and interesting characters
- Fun bits of lore sprinkled shown organically
- Great writing and language.
I'd recommend to anyone who loves fantasy books

This was a really fun read. It felt like a really unique world, and was such a fascinating intro to a series I can't wait to read more of!
