Too much gratuitous violence to make me want to read more in this series. Hank is sort of an anti-hero, but very likable. It would be interesting to see where Huston takes him, but I just don't have the stomach for it.

Started reading Caught Stealing this morning, finished it this evening. It's been quite a while since I've had a book I couldn't put down.

I felt like I stepped into this guy's life and was dragged along with him into the unknown. I loved it and I can't believe it hasn't been made into a movie. It's intense and suspenseful, but manages to be funny so it's not TOO heavy

It's an intriguing, violent "wrong man" plot. It reads well and got me into it quick. I liked all the back story bits, and love how he cared as much as he did about his secondary and tertiary characters. While, I thought it was a fun read, it screamed first novel - occasionally stiff and creaky. The blame for where this book fails falls firmly on the shoulders of his editor (although, who knows what it looked like before the editor). The book is entrenched in NYC and attempts to embrace the cultural world that this character lives in, which is fantastic, but, the problem is he got some facts wrong and because of this the book comes across as false. I don't know jack about baseball. The main character drones on about it (which is supposed to be character building, I guess), so I'd normally have to assume that Charlie Huston actually knows what he's talking about. But when he states firmly that Master of Reality is Black Sabbath's second record (it is the third), or has the character being chased on 14th st midday (this is just so dumb, 14th st is public, open and safe even before when this was set when all the strip clubs where down there) you just can't trust anything that he refers to (I had to look up the St. Marks "oldest" fact, because I knew Trinity was older, but his semantics beat me out).

Still, a fun ride.

Wow. This book is just amazing. Extremely fast paced, great character development, and the impact of Huston's visuals are so jarringly violent and vivid, at times it would literally shake me to the bone. Proceed with caution though because this is not for anyone with a low tolerance to blood or violence....or guns. And also cats. Charlie Huston might be my new all time favorite author.
