Read half. The main female character was a male fantasy—young, beautiful, smart, sexy, but looking for men to bail her out when she does what she knows she shouldn’t. I didn’t buy her as a character.

If you can tell anything by the month plus it took me to read this mystery, you can tell it was exceptionally mediocre. I cared absolutely nothing for any character, the plot was meh, and the murderer reveal was, well it's this person... because it was. Not because of anything anyone figured out... really it was quite terrible.

This book is the first in a series that is set in Greece featuring police chief Andreas Kaldis. Overall, it is not a bad little mystery and I was actually surprised that it was a gritty as it was. I was expecting something a little more cozy and this was definitely not cozy. Basically, a body is found in a small church on the island of Mykonos and on investigation, the remains of 17 other bodies are found and then another young tourist disappears. The book was a little uneven and the author withheld the identity of the killer way too long but if you're a mystery fan, this one is probably worth your time.

This was a relatively good mystery for being first in a series. I don't know why they always have to be serial killer stories (so old, now). Also, I think that having the entire array of serious suspects just disappear on their own business to the point the police cannot locate any of them for questioning and follow up (on a fairly small island, no less) required a lot of suspension of disbelief. I did enjoy the ambiance of Mykonos and some of the description was quite engaging.

Murder in Mykonos is the first novel for author Jeffrey Siger but he is no stranger to Greece and the island of Mykonos. He was a resident for 25 years and is able to translate that knowledge and his personal experience of the island into his novel.

The story starts with a beautiful young woman arriving on the island to enjoy the island and revel in the all night partying that Mykonos is known for. She is only able to enjoy the nightlife for a few days before she disappears with no fanfare.

Also new to the island is newly appointed Chief of Police is Andreas Kaldis. He is a former homicide detective from Athens but has been moved to the island in a political power play. He isn’t thrilled to be here but does his best to improve the law enforcement on the island. However, he arrives on the island in time to be caught up in a mystery that spans 20 years upon the discovery of the young woman found dead along with bones from at least 3 other victims.

Then another young woman disappears and this time someone is looking for her: her mother and her uncle, Deputy Minister Renatis. However, time is running out and they must find the killer before he strikes again. Will they find her before he follows through and kills again?

I thought for a first book that the author did a great job of pulling me into the storyline and throwing in just enough suspects that I was not able to figure out the killer might be and even at the end it took some deciphering of the conversations to figure out who the killer was since he was not named. This may have been the only part that I didn’t like because I had to go back and figure out who it was based on some information that was provided.

As I got closer to the end I definitely couldn’t put it down, it had me hooked and reading faster because I wanted to know who was killing the women, especially since he had been doing it for 20 years and had gotten away with it thus far. I don’t know that I liked that one of the police investigators was involved and knew what was going on but that is what makes a story, intrigue and underhandedness.

If you like mysteries and thrillers you will love Murder in Mykonos.

Great atmosphere and characters but the pacing was off and the reveal unclear.

3 stars = I liked it by GR's rating system.

Spoilers ahead:
This is my first book by this author. A serial killer is killing tall blonde tourists in this island paradise. Chief Kaldis has been banished from Athens to this post as a downwards promotion and now he has to solve this murder without tarnishing the reputation of the town.

Everything needed to make a good book is in place, for example the usual suspects of major characters like a politically savvy mayor who wants this solved quietly, an experienced detective who is willing to risk his pension to catch the killer, a smart and gorgeous victim, a dedicated protagonist who will go all lengths to solve the crime and a host of interesting side characters.

Other things are well done: The setting is well written. The writing is easy to read and get into. I got into the book right away. The characters are pretty well fleshed out and interesting. The author tries hard to hide the killer's identity when writing from his point of view but persists too long and we don't get to know until the last page but by that time the book was over already and it didn't really matter anymore. Some of the sequences ended up being too long such as the chase and despite hiding the i.d. of the killer, the suspense was not high enough.

In summary I felt that everything was in place for a very good book but the writer didn't go hard enough in the right places. But he did a good enough job that I'm reading book #2 right now.

So I chose this because it was set in Greece on an island I knew pretty well. I mean, at least I'd know the places they were talking about right?

What a surprise to find a well written novel with a great cast and well rounded characters. I enjoyed this far more than I thought I would when I first bought the book. Now I'm hooked for the rest of the series!
