Right after I finished this book, I had to sit with it for awhile, because it's been a really long time since a book smacked me in the face and left me gob smacked with the ending. I cannot stop thinking about how masterfully this book was set up, how perfect the red herrings were and how I just didn't see the end coming. It. Was. All. There. And I missed it! I actually went back and read the last half of the book again because I was so flabbergasted.
Without giving too much away (because you really should go into this book blind), here’s a little setup: Rob Jacobson is one of the top criminal lawyers in D.C. and has been best friends with Jack Cutler, a former U.S. president, since their school days in Brooklyn. Their bond is unshakable—or so it seems. When Jack’s mistress, White House lawyer Amanda Harper, is brutally murdered and her body is dumped in Rock Creek Park, Jack is accused of the crime. With his reputation and freedom on the line, he turns to Rob to defend him. But their history makes the case even more complicated: Rob not only dated Jack’s wife before she became First Lady, but also had a passionate affair with Amanda, the very woman Jack is accused of killing.
If you love psychological thrillers, legal dramas, or books with a really freaking good ending, you'll love this book! Thank you to the author Lawrence Robbins, Atria books and Netgalley for the ARC copy of this book!

The President's Lawyer is a debut novel that follows lawyer Rob Jacobson as he defends his childhood best friend -- the former US president -- against a murder charge. This novel had me hooked from the first pages. I did not like a single character in this book, but that didn't make this any less bingeworthy. I had to know if the president was actually guilty, or if he had been set up. And let me tell you, the twist at the end was not at all what I was expecting! The author did a great job developing the characters, their backstories, and their motivations. You can also tell that he knows a lot about law, as his courtroom scenes had quite the air of authenticity.

This was an absolute mess of a book.
Rob Jacobson has agreed to defend the former president of the United States, Jack Cutler, for the murder of his mistress. Her name was Amanda Harper and she was a junior lawyer and part of his staff. There is something to consider with Rob taking Cutler’s case. The two have been best friends for decades.
Rob will need at least one thing from Cutler now that he has decided to take the case. What Rob will need is complete and total honesty. The ability to defend Cutler will no doubt will be faced with countless obstacles. It is no secret that the former president had an affair with the victim. The fact that Rob at one time also had an affair with her makes things uncomfortable for him as he looks for ways to get Cutler off. Things are not looking good for Rob’s case, yet he is not one to give up.
The narrative unfolds through a dual timeline, incorporating flashbacks to provide context and background information. While the flashbacks were intriguing, the true heart of the story lies in the courtroom scenes where Rob presents his legal arguments and examines witnesses. These courtroom scenes are compelling and eye-opening, showcasing the author’s skill in crafting a gripping legal thriller.
This book marks a sensational debut for the author. While I’m not typically a fan of legal thrillers, this one has piqued my interest in the sub-genre. Not only does the story feature remarkable courtroom repartee, but it also delves into a sleazy backdrop of secrets involving questionable tastes in the bedroom. The ending is nothing short of spectacular, leaving this reader eager to discover more.
Many thanks to Atria and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
