A depressed college professor goes to a Victorian beach hotel to kill herself but when she gets there she is met with a wedding. In the elevator on the way to her room the bride comes in the elevator and she tells her what she is about to do and Lila (the bride) begs her not to under the guise of ruining her wedding week. She doesn’t end up killing herself and by the end of the week joins the wedding party. She is getting to know all of the wedding people and how everyone fits into each other’s lives. They learn more about themselves and the people they are about to call family through this third party. She also learns to be herself and that it’s never too late to start over even a divorced woman in your 40s. It’s ok to evolve and do what is best for you even when something is expected. The book is a great commentary on the ways we dilute and skirt happiness, settling because what if this is the best it gets. How a stranger placed in your path can bring things out of you were hiding from others and yourself because they are too much to face on your own. I want to be like Phoebe and be an open door for people to be comfortable stepping through. The writing was beautiful the pacing was good and the story was an interesting journey in self discovery. Lila is a bitch though I understand why she is the way she is but as the story progressed I realized I liked her less and less. I want to read more from the author in the future

This book had soooo much hype. It just didn’t live up to the hype sadly. Parts of it were interesting, but for the majority of the book I felt I was just reading it to finish it.
