Had to read this for book club, and it was … okay. Fannie Flagg did it better with Fried Green Tomatoes. Homer Hickam did it better with Carrying Albert Home. This was … okay.

- Throughout the whole book, "Californy" and Woody's name really grated on me. Wish there was some cultural/political context given to explain why he was named after Woodrow Wilson; without that, it felt gimmicky
- How was Woody able to remember so much 85 years later?? Not believable in any way. And how depressing that nothing else significant happened in his life between age 20 and 105.
- Disagree with the message I felt like the book was giving of animals being better than people / that you can have a deeper connection with something that can't talk back than you can have with another person
- Well researched and the history was kind of interesting sometimes. The appendix of historical notes at the back was interesting to read through and showed more of her research.
- Characters became more authentic feeling as I read on, but I still didn't really like anyone
- Nightmare thing was cliche, and was supposed to build suspense but was mostly just annoying
- Same note for Old Man's hand and the comment from the circus man
- Bucket list thing was not impactful to me with the revision - it didn't change meaning in my view
- Just overall kind of boring and could have easily been a 30 page short story

This book was dreadful. I had to peel my eyes back to keep reading. Talk about snooze fest. I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t that.

Historical fiction set in late 1930s about a young man who sees some giraffes that needs to be driven from east coast to west and how he tries to go with them. Like most historical fiction, I come away thinking I’ve learned a lot about the time period. I enjoyed this story immensely.
