3/5 - There were some things I liked about this book and some things I didn't. I liked how the story went back and forth between present day (an old man in a nursing home writing down his story) to the past (the story of the giraffes). I really liked the writing style and the use of different graphics and newspaper articles to move the story along, but I do feel like the pacing could have used some work. I found several chapters to drag on far too long and become redundant. Overall, not sad I read it, but not sure if I'd recommend.

Took me a bit to get into this book but, overall, I enjoyed the story and loved the ending.
Fun fact: I’m a former zookeeper. I like animals - a lot. So, naturally, I typically enjoy books about animals. Honestly, it’s a blessing and a curse. I can be hyper critical of them, but at the same time, I’m more susceptible to having strong emotions in relations to the drama of the story.
This book was one of the rare books that I really couldn’t/didn’t need to be hyper critical of. It was beautifully written, and right from the start the author won me over by working into the story that giraffes are endangered, and that she hopes this story helps. This is a historical fiction based on a true event. Two giraffes really did survive one of the worst hurricanes to hit the east coast while still at sea, and then survived a cross-country journey to their forever home.
While not many details on the original journey are out there, the author did a phenomenal job of filling in the gaps with a great view of what it was like in the dust bowl era, and while I’m sure the true story wasn’t quite as dramatic, it really did pull at my heartstrings. Please read this.

This is a beautiful story, that I had no idea what to expect, but believe it will stay with me forever. Simply stated, it’s a story about going “West With Giraffes,” and I will be recommending it to every single person I know for many years to come. Truly, this was remarkable. It’s about life, inside of life, and moments that build to be memories, that build to be meaning, that may matter. I will never look at giraffes in a zoo the same way again, as we all have our own stories, our animals do too, and all animals do as well.
Seriously, I could not stand this book and only got halfway through. I will be honest and say I tried this on audio and maybe it would have been different if I read it myself. The narrator was so annoying and the main character was driving me insane. Not for me, maybe for you tho.

This book was recommended in a Facebook group and it didn’t disappoint. I couldn’t put it down.
