I was a little nervous when I started this book because there’s a lot of old slang in it that made the first couple chapters a little rough, but once I got used to it, the book was an easy and delightful read! It’s an absolutely wonderful and heartwarming story with secrets that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Ugh this book didn’t do it for me. Maybe I felt the rush or the end of year reading challenge. And this book definitely had a slower rhythm. The actor who read the book also took a while to warm up to, he sounded 102 years old. I wish it was a YA novel or maybe a picture book. It didn’t grab me as much as I hoped. But it was worth my time.

I did finish this at a sprint pace, so it’s an easy and quick read.

The characters are believable and likable in their own way. The giraffes themselves or characters in the night, and I love the way she even just makes distinctions between their two personalities.

This book has me wanting to go to the San Diego safari park.

The plot was very linear and straightforward. They really weren’t many twists, and turns that there was an attention to keep you interested in the book.

My biggest problem with the book is that I’m not sure if she’s actually driven the places she described in the book. Here’s why I think so. First off, she talks about major switch switch backs along skyline Drive which I’ve been on skyline Drive several times and I wouldn’t call or any of the switchbacks super major but maybe with a truck full of giraffes its possible. Also , if you’re driving from the East Coast Boston area down to DC, you’re not gonna see the Washington monument if you’re driving into DC from the north because of the landscape. That really bothered me. You would have to drive in from the west or the south to see the Washington monument.

I would say that her research about the highway system (vs the interstate system which wouldn’t have existed) really gave a feel for what it felt like to drive highway, cross country back then. That was very believable and gave the novel a richness that but otherwise it wouldn’t have had.

I think it could have been an excellent short story! I enjoyed the ending and would give it 3 stars if the rest of the book was like the last 10%.

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did.   I couldn't put it down!    Grab tissues for the ending.
