This book is beautiful. I am a mother in my 30s reading this in 2023, never guessing my heart would warm so much to a teenaged boy from panhandle TX in the Dust Bowl. Just beautiful, poignant, sweet, exciting, and heartbreaking. This book was my favorite read of 2023.

I wanted to love this book as so many others did, but I found it so repetitive and boring. This happened and this happened and this happened. I just couldn’t get into it. . . . Until the last chapter. I wish the whole book had been as beautifully written as that.

The writing of this makes you feel part of the trek Woody takes from east to west. You are with him as he fibs a little to get hired on, to reliving his nightmares. I truly could not wait to read the next paragraph, page, chapter. A must read for those who loves historial fiction.

I loved the historical fiction. Living in San Diego, I was intrigued by the connection to the SD Zoo which has so many memories for me and my children. The story was such a wild ride, but I imagine it was a daunting task to transport these two giraffes across the US when there were very few transcontinental roads. I love how the author wove in the time period. It was a fast read and I know just what friend to pass this treasure to next.

This was a very interesting story, a likely fictional account of a fact based event that happened in the 1938 and told by a old man in present day who’s over 100. I’m an animal lover, like Jones and Woody I don’t have much respect for people who treat them poorly. Book #9 in 2022
