This book picks up the story of Joanna, the runaway slave who came to Elm Creek Farm through the Underground Railroad in the first book of this series, The Runaway Quilt.
This was a powerful story of pain, the hate of human beings, and resilience. It doesn’t sugarcoat the complete and utter ugliness of how human beings can treat people who do not look like them. How they try to define them as less than, and the disgusting arrogance of a culture that believed it was better than.
I don’t know Ms. Chiaverini’s cultural background, and I understand that own voices are extremely important. Having said that, this novel does what Ms. Chiaverini does best, and that is historical fiction. I fell under its spell and had a hard time putting it down. 5 stars ⭐️

This entry is primarily historical fiction and was one of my top favorites in the series!
More history focus than quilting focus, but still a good story with interesting characters. Nice summer read.

Primarily the story of Joanna, a runaway slave who was captured but also had spent time at Elm Creek.
Been a long time since I read a slave narrative. This one was heart-wrenching.
I love this series, but this one didn't hold my interest as much as the others. Hopefully the latest one is better. Very minimal quilting in the story.
This was probably my favorite book in the series, though it really has nothing to do with the Elm Creek Quilters. It is the story of the slave, Joanna, after she is caught from running away. Such a glimpse into the life of a slave!
