I heard about this book through a Facebook group that people were naming their favorite heroines for 2017. From the brief synopsis the woman gave, it sounded like a book that I would truly enjoy, which made me buy it. And I'm glad I did.

This was the story of Levi, a single father trying to raise his 4 year old daughter after Lily's mom walked out on them. One night, he ended up taking his daughter to the hospital, and there he met Emerson. Emerson was trying to put herself through nursing school while working part time. The three of them formed a bond that was quite taking. The care in which Emmy showed toward Levi's daughter was amazing, and she and Levi complemented each other well. And the lengths to which Emmy went to take care of her was impressive!

I am a sucker for single parent tropes, and this fit the bill. If there was anything that I found wrong, it was that it was a little too insta-lovey for me. But it worked in this book. I am glad that I took the time to read Fighting for Us, and will check out other books by Heather Lyn.

unusual book

I found this book slightly hard to read. I think with maybe 25-50 more pages of conversation development it could be a five star book. It just didn’t fully do it for me. Definitely an unexpected twist that I didn’t see coming, and I appreciated the fact that the author didn’t do the normal “let’s have a big fight and break up at the 70-80% mark” that so many authors do. Overall a nice book.

Let me start by saying that I loved Heather Lyn’s Hearts on Fire series it has everything a romance reader could want; swoon-worthy heroes, feisty women, a little angst, charm, and beautiful love stories. Fighting for Us is better! Sure, it has all the aforementioned components, but it also has something more. This book was special. Heather crafts a world in which you want to live. You want to be friends with these characters and spend time with them. She hits you with all the emotions and feels. This book deals with some difficult situations and I felt the PTSD aspect was handled with sensitivity and care. I read it in one sitting once I started I just didn’t want to leave these characters. This cover is brilliant. I love it. It is beautiful, the lilies in the background are a wonderful addition that I didn’t notice at first glance but work perfectly with the story. I like that it’s understated and draws the reader in. This book shows the growth in Heather’s writing and I cannot wait to see what she does next because if she keeps on this path she is going to be unstoppable.

These characters are fantastic, I love them so much. Levi is everything you could want in a book boyfriend. He is sweet and charming, smart and funny. He knows what he wants and loves deeply. He’ll do whatever it takes to keep the people he loves safe. He isn’t afraid to show his feelings. He is such a sweet daddy and the sort of father every little girl needs. Emerson is fantastic, I loved her so so much. I’m usually quite picky about the female leads and it takes time for me to warm to them but not Emmy, from the get-go I just adored her. She was the perfect match for Levi. She was funny and sweet, smart and feisty. She was a fighter, in that she fought for what she wanted and wouldn’t let go. I adored her strength. She’s the type of girl we all want to be friends with. Lily was the sweetest little girl ever. We see some support characters that will eventually have their own books (it’s called The Jackson Trilogy, so it kinda gives it away, right?). It gave little glimpses into Caden and Sydney that left me wanting to know more. Ok, so I’m partial to Cade, he’s just so dreamy. Seriously, I was swooning. Syd seems totally awesome too. Can. Not. Wait!

The relationship between Levi, Emmy and Lily is fast, and it works. Sometimes insta-lust/love doesn’t, but for this story it is perfect. The slow burn wasn’t necessary as they met and had an instant connection. I loved the inclusion of Lily in almost everything, she was such an integral part of their relationship, it was like Emmy was made to be her mummy which was sweet and heart-warming. The chemistry between Levi and Emmy was jumping off the page and kept me glued to their story. The sexy times were scorching and will leave you swooning and reaching for a fan. (Is it hot in here?) Each scene made sense to the story and felt like it earned its place, none of it felt like filler, which I was very happy about. Their relationship wasn’t without its trials and angst. It was emotional and beautiful.
Side-note: The book contains some man on woman violence that may be difficult to read. I will say that I don’t like reading about it, however, I didn’t struggle with this book because it was necessary to the story and what comes after.

Ugh... God no please...

The MCs' first encounter?? Terrible. For real. She is completely unprofessional. And he has the audacity to call her sweetheart...
Seriously? That's what you call the nurse who has just taken care of your daughter? Argh. I don't get why guys think it's fine to call a woman that when they meet for the first time. Not cool...

This encounter gave me the impression that the hero is a sleezy guy but that wasn't the case (thankfully) as he was actually a gorgeous dad and definitely a boyfriend right out of your dreams.

The heroine, though, didn't appeal to me. She's 27 and yet is so insecure. I hate it when she calls herself slutty for kissing a guy when they meet for the second time. I mean, what the heck is that even supposed to mean? That a woman shouldn't kiss a guy right after meeting him? What about a one night stand? etc. That's just not how I see things. And I can't believe that she does at that age.
And then she is so self-conscious. She sees herself as this plain and boring woman who can never compete with the gorgeous guy in front of her. Oh come on, honey... It is ridiculous when she tells us she isn't self-conscious but then she states the flaws she believes she has..

Anyways, she is a very sweet woman who is enarmored with both the hero and his daughter Lily. I found her just a bit too over-the-top sweet but hey... Then, as the story continues, I found that she was portrayed as this clueless, naive and pathetic teen. Again, she is 27... And there is no reason for her crying all the time. Just woman up, ff's sake.

Writing Style.
Okay.
Nothing more than that. It was a bit repetitive. Plus, the dialogues were just so... simple and plain. Same with the writing style. Unoriginal.

Plot?
Insta love. But their relationship develops over time.
A bit of drama and crime.
Little girl who doesn't have a mom and is so lucky that her dad's girlfriend would love to be the best mom ever... Usually a topic I love but this time it was so lifeless. Lily was like a little doll, repeating the same phrases all the time.
The miscommunication between the MCs drew me insane towards the ending.
And then the ending... too rushed? Ah I don't know... That book just wasn't my cuppa.

All in all, this one was a quick read that doesn't require you to use your brain cells. Very sweet. So beware.
No srsly what was with all the 'I love yous' thrown in there each and every time?
